At KelpCrofters we selectively cultivate hardy and fast growing brown kelp species that are rich in bioactive compounds, plant growth hormones, trace elements and nutrients. We then transform our kelp into all-natural plant growth stimulants that help land plants survive stress such as drought and disease, improve growth and root formation, promote soil health and nutrient uptake, while also reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers.

Made with Rope-Grown Kelp

We grow our kelp on ropes suspended in the crystal clear waters off the Isle of Skye, on the beautiful and rugged west coast of Scotland. The kelp is carefully cultivated from seed in our own laboratory, and raised on our farm to harvest. It is then processed locally using low-energy methods to produce a range of seaweed-based products that are packed with minerals, nutrients and bioactive compounds to nourish both plants and people.

The varieties of kelp we grow include Saccharina latissima (sugar kelp) and Alaria esculenta (winged kelp), which are big brown seaweeds that grow to approximately 3 meters long.

Because we cultivate our own kelp, right from seed to harvest, we are able to produce fully traceable seaweed-based products, proudly manufactured in Scotland and delivered direct to you. Each batch is tested for safety, quality and chemical composition through accredited laboratories. So you can rest assured that all our products meet strict safety and quality criteria.

Good for the Environment

Kelp farming is an environmentally-friendly, and climate-friendly form of aquaculture that does not require input of any fertilisers, chemicals or pesticides, and actually improves the local marine environment.

Kelp absorbs carbon dioxide from the water as it grows which captures carbon. When farmed kelp is harvested and made into products such as our plant growth stimulants and soil improvers this encourages even more carbon drawdown and capture (through improved soil condition and plant growth). Kelp farming boosts local biodiversity by providing habitats for fish and small invertebrates, which attract predators such as seals and birds. Kelp also cleans the water by absorbing excess nutrients that have entered the sea from other developments and activities.

Since establishing KelpCrofters in 2020 we have worked closely with leading scientists and innovation centres to design our operations and products, with the aim of maximising performance and quality, while minimising our environmental footprint.

The Skye waters where we grow our kelp are classified as  'High Status' according to the Water Framework Directive, which is the best rating a water body can receive, and means our kelp is uncontaminated with harmful chemicals or pollution.
